Special Seminar: "Data-Driven Engineering Using High-Throughput Measurements of Antibody Function"
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Location: MBB 1.210
LaMontaigne Center for Infectious Diseases (LCID)
Presents October’s Seminar:
Massively parallel, high throughput measurements of protein function have revolutionized protein science and engineering. Such measurements enable machine learning and other data-driven approaches for the efficient navigation of functional sequence space. In this talk I will describe technology my lab has built for determining quantitative sequence-function relationships in proteins. We apply this technology to two separate areas. In the first part of my talk I will describe how we use these tools to develop highly engineered monoclonal antibodies that are resistant to viral escape. In the second part of my talk I will describe how these tools enable a completely new genetically encoded biosensor platform capable of detecting many different classes of small drug-like molecules.
Tim Whitehead is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at CU Boulder. He was previously (2011-2018) an Assistant Professor and the Johansen Crosby Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering at UC-Berkeley in Doug Clark’s lab and did postdoctoral training in the lab of David Baker at the University of Washington. Tim has published over 35 peer-reviewed journal publications, 6 patents (5 licensed), and has received numerous awards, including an NSF CAREER and a 2017 Young Investigator Award from PEGS (world’s largest protein engineering conference).
