Stevens Industrial Seminar: Batteries & Beyond: An Industrial Perspective on Shifting Energy in Space & Time

As the energy transition unfolds, energy generation, distribution, storage, and use are evolving rapidly. Traditionally, carbon-based fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas have been globally traded and served as energy storage media for the power and transportation sectors. With the growth of lower-carbon energy technologies, particularly wind and solar power, effective use of renewable electrons requires high-performing, cost-effective solutions for storage and distribution services that are analogous to traditional fuels.

This talk will review key challenges whose solutions are central to successful commercial deployment of energy storage across markets, including relevant technologies and the range of size and time scales for significant applications. Additionally, I will discuss some of Shell’s R&D efforts to understand fundamental phenomena driving energy storage performance and life, and how these factors link to business decisions. Specific examples will be highlighted to illustrate analyses as well as computational & experimental approaches. Recent progress in energy systems integration technologies and considerations for power generation and the chemical process industries will also be described.

Elizabeth Endler currently serves as the Principal Technology Advisor – Electric Power and Senior Principal Scientist - Electrification, Integration, & Storage for Shell International Exploration & Production, based in Houston, TX.  Her work is focused on the foundational science, innovative technologies, and commercial opportunities related to electrification of industry, mobility, and buildings.  She has over 18 years of experience in industrial R&D, including work in fundamental research, consumer product development, technology commercialization, project development and valuation, venture capital investing, mergers and acquisitions support, and sustainability benchmarking. 

After beginning her industrial research career at 3M Company, Elizabeth joined Shell in 2007.  In 2011, she became one of the founding members of the Future Energy Technologies team at Shell, responsible for demonstrating emerging, low-carbon energy technologies.  In 2016, Elizabeth was invited to lead the creation of a global energy storage research program for Shell.   More recently, she managed a global research portfolio of internal technology development efforts involving international R&D teams and over 30 external collaborations in energy storage & system integration. Elizabeth has served as an invited speaker, panelist, and moderator for global conferences and workshops focused on electrification and energy storage, contributed to sustainability reports for the chemical industry, and advised multiple academic consortia.  Elizabeth holds a BS from the University of South Carolina and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, both in chemical engineering.
