Research Summary

My current project is titled “Investigation of the Solid State Interactions Occurring between Polymers and Macromolecules during Hot-Melt Extrusion.” Preliminary findings have demonstrated that chemical interactions between carrier polymers and ionic macromolecules occur in both the solid state and in aqueous media. The resulting solid extrudates release drug in vitro, independent of pH, and the drug release profiles follow a zero-order mechanism. The properties of extruded materials and physical mixtures are studied by using thermal analysis, such as DSC and/or modulated DSC, powder X-ray diffraction and FT-IR. Solid-state NMR (13C CP/MAS NMR) is used to investigate the interactions between polymers and drug or other ingredients, since a chemical shift is affected by solid state interaction.
