Background
Dan Barad is an avid
sailor, originally from San Diego, California. He
earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s of
Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from the
University of California, Santa Barbara. After entering
the doctoral program in the Department of Chemical
Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin,
he joined the research group of Professor Nicholas
A. Peppas.
Research Summary
With the goal of developing
innovative sensing and recognition micro-/nanodevices,
his current research focuses on the synthesis, patterning,
characterization, and kinetics of novel hydrogels.
These intelligent polymer networks are to be used
in the synthesis of BioMEM/NEMs, biorecognitive
sensors, and microfluidic devices. Ultimately, such
synthetic devices could be employed to monitor and/or
control biological events for applications in biology
and medicine.
