Professor Benny Freeman, William J. (Bill) Murray, Jr. Endowed Chair in Engineering, has been awarded the 2023 Braskem Award for Excellence in Materials Engineering and Science for his “outstanding contributions to materials engineering and science polymers for gas and liquid membranes, training of students and extensive service.”

Beeny Freeman wins AICHE Braskem Award for Excellence in Materials Engineering and Science

Presented during the Materials Engineering and Sciences Division (MESD) Plenary Session during the annual AIChE meeting in Orlando, The Braskem Award for Excellence in Materials Engineering and Science is bestowed annually to a leading researcher in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of materials engineering and science.

Each year the winner is invited as the featured speaker for the Materials Engineering and Sciences Division Plenary session at the national AIChE meeting. Freeman’s lecture is on Wednesday, November 8th at 8AM: Ion Solubility, Diffusivity, and Transport in Charged Polymer Membranes.

Freeman joins these other Texas ChE faculty who have previously accepted this award:

  • 2001 John G. Ekerdt (Professor Emeritus)
  • 1985 Don D.R. Paul (Professor Emeritus)
  • 1984 Nicholas A. Peppas (current faculty)

For his 2022 Separations Division Founders Award, awarded for his “considerable record of service to the Separations Division and the separations area, and for having participated extensively in a variety of division activities with documented evidence of sustained service,” he will give a lecture Monday, November 6th at 8:05AM: Fundamental Membrane Science Research Addressing the Water-Energy Nexus.

Earlier this year, Freeman was elected into the National Academy of Engineering for his pioneering work in the understanding, design and engineering of membrane materials for both water purification and gas separation.
