Study shows shifts in U.S. species over last few decades
Global warming has forced U.S. plants and animals to change their behavior in recent decades, according to a Pew Center on Global Climate Change study co-authored by biology professor Camille Parmesan.
Parmesan said some species have been gradually moving northward to find a more tolerable climate.
She said dangers in shifting exist when species who had never had contact with each other begin competing for resources.

Assistant professor receives $625,000 fellowship
Thomas Truskett, a chemical engineering assistant professor, received a five-year, $625,000 Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation on Monday.
Truskett will study nano-sized glassy materials used in high-resolution printing and biomedical fields. He also will research proteins' behavior, which is applicable to drug development.
"If you understand how a material works in its internal structure, you'll be able to create stronger materials more resistant to failure," Truskett said.

White planning to file request to recount election
The Kelly White campaign is planning to file a recount request pending official tally of all provisional ballots. White ran against Todd Baxter for Texas House District 48.
Dana DeBeauvoir, Travis County clerk, said Monday the unofficial margin of votes dropped from 171 to approximately 150 after counting absentee and provisional ballots.
Melissa Abel, a White campaign representative, said while the margin of victory had narrowed, it would not be enough to reverse the election night decision, and as a result they might request a recount by Wednesday.
