Mechanical Engineering Shop Certification

The Mechanical Engineering Shop offers students from all departments use of equipment during regular working hours  upon the completion and payment of a training course offered the first two weeks of each month.

Course Registration

You may sign up for training courses on the 1st floor in ETC 1.214. There may be up to seven courses offered per semester depending on a need basis. Groups may request a specific date for certification with approval by the shop supervisor.

Cost

The training course costs $120 and is limited to six students, with a minimum of four students per course.
*Payments are processed with a check or valid UT EID and billed electronically.  Charges can only be waived by approval from the Mechanical Engineering Department Chairman.

Course Hours

Training courses are offered Monday and Wednesday from 12pm-4pm at the Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop located in ETC 1.210.

Course Objective

The training course provides basic instruction for the operation of mills and lathes, along with safety instructions needed to understand machining equipment.

Shop Usage

After completing the course, students are given access the shop. Appropriate tooling and materials can be purchased from the shop. Machine time is charged at $15 an hour for students who are not mechanical engineering majors with a check or valid UT EID.

Rules and Regulations

Safety rules in the student shop are strictly enforced.  Students must read and sign a list of these rules at the beginning of the course and provide an emergency contact number in case of an accident. Proper attire is required at all times. Do not wear opened toed shoes, shorts, or jewelry. You will be sent home. Long hair must be pulled back into a bun. Students violating any safety rules will lose all shop privileges and will not be allowed to return.  Do not bring friends into the shop as observers.
