NAMS International Travel Award

The NAMS International Travel Awards are presented annually to outstanding individuals who are near the start of their careers in membrane science and technology. Each Award will provide up to $1000 reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses associated with attending and making an oral or poster presentation at an international membrane meeting such as United Engineering Foundation, ICOM, Euromembrane, IMSTEC, and others.

Eligible applicants include graduate students, post-docs, and new faculty members and researchers in industry and government who have not previously received a NAMS International Travel Award. Applicants must have already submitted an abstract for an oral/poster presentation at the international meeting of interest, must be current members of the North American Membrane Society, and must agree to write a one-page report on the Conference (to be published in the following issue of the NAMS Quarterly).

Reimbursement is contingent on the oral or poster presentation being accepted by the conference and given by the applicant. Applicants are required to notify NAMS in a timely manner if the oral or poster presentation is not accepted. Reimbursement will be distributed after the meeting upon submission of appropriate receipts and the one-page write-up on the Conference.

Application Materials:

  1. one-page resume describing applicant's education and work experience
  2. one-page letter written by the applicant describing his/her interest in membrane science/technology and describing how attendance at the meeting will be beneficial
  3. copy of the abstract submitted to the meeting.

Application Deadlines and Review:

Application packages will be accepted throughout the year (addressed to John Pellegrino, NIST, MS 838, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305). Applications will be reviewed in two separate rounds by a panel of reviewers appointed by the Board of Directors of the North American Membrane Society. In the first round, applications received by June 2 will be considered. The second round will consider applications received by December 31. Any further change in the dates for future Award reviews will be announced in the NAMS Quarterly and on the NAMS web site. Award decisions will be made within 45 days after the close of each round.

Review criteria will include:

  1. how effectively this Award would support the overall objectives of NAMS
  2. the applicant's resume and overall qualifications
  3. the applicant's demonstrated interest in membrane science and technology
  4. the long-term impact that the Award will have on the applicant's future career path

Decisions by the panel are final. Questions regarding the NAMS International Travel Award or application procedures should be addressed to John Pellegrino at jjp@boulder.nist.gov.
