NAMS Undergraduate Research Fellowships

The NAMS Undergraduate Research Fellowships are presented annually to support outstanding undergraduates who wish to pursue a research experience in the field of synthetic membrane science and technology at a university or government facility in North America. The award provides up to $2000 stipend for the student, as well as a one-year student membership in NAMS. The application materials should be submitted by the proposed sponsor, who must be a current member of the North American Membrane Society. In addition, the student awardee must agree to provide a write-up of the research experience for publication in the Membrane Quarterly within one year of receiving the award.

Application Materials:

  1. brief description of the research project, mentoring arrangement, and any additional funding for the student/project
  2. one-page essay describing the student’s interest in the particular research experience
  3. one-page resume describing the student’s education and work experience
  4. one-page vita from the sponsor.

Application Deadlines and Review:
Application packages may be sent at any time (addressed to Michelle Chapman, USBR M.S. D-8230, P.O. Box 25007, Denver, CO 80225-0007). Applications will be reviewed in two separate rounds by a panel of reviewers appointed by the Board of Directors of the North American Membrane Society. The first round of reviews will begin on March 1, 2004 (with awards made by April 15, 2004) and the second round will begin November 15, 2004 (with awards made by January 1, 2005). The research experience may begin at any time within the 6-month period following the granting of the award.

Review criteria will include:

  1. how effectively this Award would support the overall objectives of NAMS
  2. the applicant’s resume and overall qualifications
  3. the applicant’s demonstrated interest in membrane science and technology
  4. the long-term impact that the Award will have on the applicant’s future career path.

Funding will be distributed upon receipt (by NAMS) of the following materials from the student: A signed agreement to conduct and complete the project within an agreed upon time, and a signed letter agreeing to provide a write-up of the research for publication in the NAMS Quarterly within six months of completion of the project. All decisions by the Awards Committee are final. The number funded will depend on funds available within NAMS. Questions regarding the NAMS Undergraduate Research Fellowship or application procedures should be addressed to Michelle Chapman (mchapman@do.usbr.gov).
