NAMS Travel Awards

The NAMS Travel Awards will be presented annually to outstanding individuals who are near the start of their careers in membrane science and technology. Each Award will provide up to $1000 reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses associated with attending a NAMS Annual Meeting (awards for the NAMS Annual Meeting also include a complimentary registration) or an international membrane meeting such as the ICOM 2005 in Seoul, South Korea (August 2005) or other membrane related meetings. Eligible applicants include senior graduate students, post-docs, and new faculty members and researchers in industry and government who have not previously received a NAMS Travel (or International Travel) Award. Applicants must be current members of the North American Membrane Society, and must agree to write a one-page report on the Meeting (to be published in the following issue of the NAMS Quarterly). Reimbursement will be distributed after the meeting upon submission of appropriate receipts and the one-page write-up on the Conference.

Application Materials:

  1. one-page resume describing the applicant’s education and work experience
  2. one-page letter written by the applicant describing his/her interest in membrane science/technology and describing how attendance at the meeting will be beneficial to their career.

If a presentation is planned, either an oral or poster, and an abstract is prepared, please include a copy; its intended presentation method; and its status (pending or accepted).

Application Deadlines and Review:
Application packages will be accepted throughout the year (addressed to Michelle Chapman, USBR M.S. D-8230, P.O. Box 25007, Denver, CO 80225-0007). Applications will be reviewed in two separate rounds by a panel of reviewers appointed by the Board of Directors of the North American Membrane Society. In the first round, applications received by April 15, 2005 will be considered. The second round will consider applications received by July 31, 2005. Dates for future award reviews will be announced in the NAMS Quarterly and on the NAMS website. Award decisions will be made within 15 days after the close of each round.

Review criteria will include:

  1. how effectively this Award would support the overall objectives of NAMS
  2. the applicant’s resume and overall qualifications
  3. the applicant’s demonstrated interest in membrane science and technology
  4. the long-term impact that the Award will have on the applicant’s future career path.

Decisions by the panel are final. The number funded will depend on funds available. Questions regarding the NAMS Travel Award or application procedures should be addressed to Michelle Chapman (mchapman@do.usbr.gov).
