NAMS Travel Awards

The NAMS Travel Awards will be presented annually to outstanding individuals who are near the start of their careers in membrane science and technology. Each Award will provide up to $1000 reimbursement for reasonable expenses associated with attending a NAMS Annual Meeting or other membrane-related meetings (including international conferences.) Eligible applicants include senior graduate students, post-docs, and new faculty members and researchers in industry and government who have not previously received any type of NAMS Travel Award. Applicants must be current members of the North American Membrane Society, and must agree to write a one-page report on the Meeting (to be published in a following issue of the NAMS Quarterly.) Reimbursement will be distributed after the meeting upon submission of appropriate receipts and the one-page write-up on the Conference.

Application Materials: (submitted as pdf or MS Word-compatible electronic files)

  1. one-page resume describing the applicant's education and work experience
  2. one-page letter written by the applicant describing his/her interest in membrane science/technology and describing how attendance at the meeting will be beneficial to their career.

If a presentation is planned, either an oral or poster, and an abstract is prepared, please include a copy; its intended presentation method; and its status (pending or accepted).

Application Deadlines and Review:
Application packages will be accepted throughout the year (emailed to Michelle Chapman, mchapman@do.usbr.gov). Applications will be reviewed in two separate rounds by a panel of reviewers appointed by the Board of Directors of the North American Membrane Society. In the first round, applications received by March 1, 2006 will be considered. The second round will consider applications received by June 1, 2006. Dates for future award reviews will be announced in the NAMS Quarterly and on the NAMS website. Award decisions will be made within 15 days after the close of each round.

Review criteria will include:

  1. how effectively this Award would support the overall objectives of NAMS
  2. the applicant's resume and overall qualifications
  3. the applicant's demonstrated interest in membrane science and technology
  4. the long-term impact that the Award will have on the applicant's future career path.

Decisions by the panel are final. The number funded will depend on funds available. Questions regarding the NAMS Travel Award or application procedures should be addressed to Michelle Chapman (mchapman@do.usbr.gov).
