R & D Program Announcement

On behalf of a number of industrial organizations and a US Government Agency, the North American Membrane Society (NAMS) is requesting preproposals for research in Membrane Science and Technology. Preproposals are being sought for the problem of "Pore Size Characterization Methodology and Standards for Ultrafiltration Membranes."

Research Focus

There is a need for a commonly accepted pore size characterization methodology to advance the use of ultrafiltration membranes and processes. On the basis of a critical analysis of existing methodologies for characterization of such membrane pores, the proposed research effort would investigate, develop and demonstrate such a method or two which would have the potential of broad acceptability in the membrane user and manufacturer community.  The funding sponsors of this research have expressed interest in such a project with potential funding of around $70,000/year for 2-3 years.  The funding level and project objectives may change in Years 2 and 3.  The successful proposer must show a significant amount of cost share (at least 20%) which may be direct or indirect provided such costs are normally allowed in federally funded contracts.

Format

The preproposal application must have a cover page containing appropriate signatures, names and telephone numbers of the principal investigator (PI) and an institutional representative.  Next will come the basic preproposal, including the project description, deliverables and milestones; it is limited to a total of six single spaced pages with two additional pages for figures, if any. 12 point type is to be used and the margins must be 1" on all sides.  Following the figure pages should be a 2 page curriculum vitae of the PI. The budget pages will come next.  Include a detailed budget for each year (including institutional contributions). A page on institutional capabilities is to be provided at the end.

Eligibility

Educational institutions, commercial or industrial organizations, public entities (federal, state and local), private entities as well as individuals may submit a preproposal.

Application Deadline and Review

The last date for receipt of the preproposal is October 30, 1998.  An original and six copies of the completed preproposal are to be sent to:

                North American Membrane Society
                Sponsored R&D Committee
                Attn: Ms. Vonda Totten
                Department of Chemical Engineering
The University of Texas at Austin
                Austin, TX 78712-1062
                Phone: 512-471-4033

The preproposals will be collected by the Sponsored R&D Committee of NAMS and sent out for peer review by a select panel. The proposer selected will be contacted around Feburary 1999. The PI of the selected preproposal has to work with representatives of sponsoring organizations and others to develop a full proposal expected to be funded by the Sponsoring Organizations (not NAMS).  NAMS will not be a party in the final agreement nor does it guarantee funding.  The frequency of progress review, reports, etc.  during such a funded project will be decided by the sponsoring organizations and others.  Only nonconfidential information should be submitted in the preproposal.
