THEN - Educational Software to Aid in Teaching Heat Exchanger Networking
THEN is an educational program (developed by S. Pethe, R. Singh, S. Bhargava, R. Dhoopar and F. Carl Knopf) to assist students learning heat exchanger network synthesis. THEN is written for an IBM PC and supports both EGA and VGA graphics. The program is based on the thermodynamics approach, now termed pinch technology. Briefly, the program first locates the pinch region; above the pinch only external heating is allowed and below the pinch only external cooling is allowed. Heat exchangers are first placed at the pinch because this is the most constrained region. Away from the pinch a variety of heuristic rules are used for matching exchangers. The program determines and displays the maximum energy recovery network for a process with up to 50 streams. The program allows stream splitting and also identifies heat exchanger loops present in the network. Breaking these loops by eliminating heat exchangers results in capital cost savings but may lead to increased utilities costs. The program is not designed to solve problems where changes in physical and transport properties are important in the design. No consideration is given to forbidden matches, flexibility, safety, or control of the network. These problems are of course important and most remain active research areas; some of these problems will be addressed in Version 2 of the software. System Requirements
